Deep Learning for Gamma-Ray Bursts: A data driven event framework for X/Gamma-Ray analysis in space telescopes
The HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Pathfinder mission serves as an in-orbit demonstration of a constellation of nanosatellites whose primary scientific purpose is to discover intense high-energy transients, such as gamma-ray bursts, across a broad energy range (few keV to few MeV) with unparalleled temporal precision and exact localisation. By 2024, the first constellation of six nanosatellites is expected to be launched. To fully exploit satellite data and allow faint astronomical events to emerge, a precise estimation of satellite background count rates is required to determine whether the event is statistically valid or not. The dynamics of the background are related to the satellite's orbital information, which varies in the order of minutes, potentially hiding long transient events. This work introduces two main contributions I have brought ahead; first a novel background estimator is presented that could potentially be fitted to any type of X/Gamma-ray satellite space telescope, capable of capturing long-term dynamics and accurate enough to detect faint transients. This estimator is built using a Neural Network and tested on data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope's Gamma Burst Monitor (GBM). As a second objective, it is employed a trigger algorithm, called FOCuS (Functional Online CUSUM), to extract events from the background using the background estimator. The resulting framework, DeepGRB, can identify astronomical events that are both present and absent from the Fermi-GBM catalog. The analysis of the discovered events reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the framework.

The complementary roles of non-verbal cues for Robust Pronunciation Assessment

Numerous investigations have explored a range of features and modeling approaches aimed at enhancing modeling Research on pronunciation assessment systems focuses performance. These explorations have encompassed the utilization on utilizing phonetic and phonological aspects of non-native of Goodness-of-Pronunciation (GOP) metrics [4, 5, (L2) speech, often neglecting the rich layer of information 6], the integration of manually crafted handful of non-verbal hidden within the non-verbal cues. In this study, we proposed features such as duration, energy, and pitch [7, 8, 9], as well a novel pronunciation assessment framework, IntraVerbalPA.

Rhythm Modeling for Voice Conversion

Voice conversion aims to transform source speech into a different target voice. However, typical voice conversion systems do not account for rhythm, which is an important factor in the perception of speaker identity. To bridge this gap, we introduce Urhythmic-an unsupervised method for rhythm conversion that does not require parallel data or text transcriptions. Using self-supervised representations, we first divide source audio into segments approximating sonorants, obstruents, and silences. Then we model rhythm by estimating speaking rate or the duration distribution of each segment type. Finally, we match the target speaking rate or rhythm by time-stretching the speech segments. Experiments show that Urhythmic outperforms existing unsupervised methods in terms of quality and prosody. Code and checkpoints: https://github.com/bshall/urhythmic. Process Discovery using Classification Tree Hidden Semi-Markov Model

Various and ubiquitous information systems are being used in monitoring, exchanging, and collecting information. These systems are generating massive amount of event sequence logs that may help us understand underlying phenomenon. By analyzing these logs, we can learn process models that describe system procedures, predict the development of the system, or check whether the changes are expected. In this paper, we consider a novel technique that models these sequences of events in temporal-probabilistic manners. Specifically, we propose a probabilistic process model that combines hidden semi-Markov model and classification trees learning. Our experimental result shows that the proposed approach can answer a kind of question-"what are the most frequent sequence of system dynamics relevant to a given sequence of observable events?". For example, "Given a series of medical treatments, what are the most relevant patients' health condition pattern changes at different times?"

Estimating the Probability of Meeting a Deadline in Hierarchical Plans

Given a hierarchical plan (or schedule) with uncertain task times, we propose a deterministic polynomial (time and memory) algorithm for estimating the probability that its meets a deadline, or, alternately, that its {\em makespan} is less than a given duration. Approximation is needed as it is known that this problem is NP-hard even for sequential plans (just, a sum of random variables). In addition, we show two new complexity results: (1) Counting the number of events that do not cross deadline is \#P-hard; (2)~Computing the expected makespan of a hierarchical plan is NP-hard. For the proposed approximation algorithm, we establish formal approximation bounds and show that the time and memory complexities grow polynomially with the required accuracy, the number of nodes in the plan, and with the size of the support of the random variables that represent the durations of the primitive tasks. We examine these approximation bounds empirically and demonstrate, using task networks taken from the literature, how our scheme outperforms sampling techniques and exact computation in terms of accuracy and run-time. As the empirical data shows much better error bounds than guaranteed, we also suggest a method for tightening the bounds in some cases.

Learning to Fuse Music Genres with Generative Adversarial Dual Learning

FusionGAN is a novel genre fusion framework for music generation that integrates the strengths of generative adversarial networks and dual learning. In particular, the proposed method offers a dual learning extension that can effectively integrate the styles of the given domains. To efficiently quantify the difference among diverse domains and avoid the vanishing gradient issue, FusionGAN provides a Wasserstein based metric to approximate the distance between the target domain and the existing domains. Adopting the Wasserstein distance, a new domain is created by combining the patterns of the existing domains using adversarial learning. Experimental results on public music datasets demonstrated that our approach could effectively merge two genres.

Infinite Structured Hidden Semi-Markov Models

This paper reviews recent advances in Bayesian nonparametric techniques for constructing and performing inference in infinite hidden Markov models. We focus on variants of Bayesian nonparametric hidden Markov models that enhance a posteriori state-persistence in particular. This paper also introduces a new Bayesian nonparametric framework for generating left-to- right and other structured, explicit-duration infinite hidden Markov models that we call the infinite structured hidden semi-Markov model .

Bayesian Nonparametric Hidden Semi-Markov Models

There is much interest in the Hierarchical Dirichlet Process Hidden Markov Model (HDP-HMM) as a natural Bayesian nonparametric extension of the ubiquitous Hidden Markov Model for learning from sequential and time-series data. However, in many settings the HDP-HMM's strict Markovian constraints are undesirable, particularly if we wish to learn or encode non-geometric state durations. We can extend the HDP-HMM to capture such structure by drawing upon explicit-duration semi-Markov modeling, which has been developed mainly in the parametric non-Bayesian setting, to allow construction of highly interpretable models that admit natural prior information on state durations. In this paper we introduce the explicit-duration Hierarchical Dirichlet Process Hidden semi-Markov Model (HDP-HSMM) and develop sampling algorithms for efficient posterior inference. The methods we introduce also provide new methods for sampling inference in the finite Bayesian HSMM. Our modular Gibbs sampling methods can be embedded in samplers for larger hierarchical Bayesian models, adding semi-Markov chain modeling as another tool in the Bayesian inference toolbox. We demonstrate the utility of the HDP-HSMM and our inference methods on both synthetic and real experiments.

In this paper we introduce the explicitduration HDP-HSMM and develop posterior sampling algorithms for efficient inference in both the direct-assignment and weak-limit approximation settings. We demonstrate the utility of the model and our inference methods on synthetic data as well as experiments on a speaker diarization problem and an example of learning the patterns in Morse code.

Real-Time Scheduling via Reinforcement Learning

Cyber-physical systems, such as mobile robots, must respond adaptively to dynamic operating conditions. Effective operation of these systems requires that sensing and actuation tasks are performed in a timely manner. Additionally, execution of mission specific tasks such as imaging a room must be balanced against the need to perform more general tasks such as obstacle avoidance. This problem has been addressed by maintaining relative utilization of shared resources among tasks near a user-specified target level. Producing optimal scheduling strategies requires complete prior knowledge of task behavior, which is unlikely to be available in practice. Instead, suitable scheduling strategies must be learned online through interaction with the system. We consider the sample complexity of reinforcement learning in this domain, and demonstrate that while the problem state space is countably infinite, we may leverage the problem's structure to guarantee efficient learning.
